The Fuel for Real Change
Philippians 1 — Security • Significance • Surrender
Main Idea: When Christ becomes our life, we find our security in Him, our significance in His Gospel mission, and the freedom to surrender everything to Him.
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21
ICEBREAKER: What is something in your life that you are “all in” on—something you really enjoy, value, or get excited about?
Paul gives us a picture in Philippians 1 of what it looks like to be all in for Jesus—not because we are trying to earn His love, but because Christ has become the defining reality of our lives.
1. SECURE IN CHRIST
Read Philippians 1:6, 21.
Paul was writing from prison, yet his circumstances did not determine his security or his joy. He knew that the God who began a good work in him would complete it.
Our security is ultimately not found in circumstances, health, finances, relationships, success, or even our own performance. Our security is in Christ.
Discuss
- What do Philippians 1:6 and 1:21 tell us about the source of Paul's confidence?
- Where are you most tempted to look for security apart from Christ?
- How does knowing that God finishes what He starts change the way you face uncertainty, suffering or failure?
- Read Romans 8:1 and Romans 8:32. What do these verses add to our understanding of security in Christ?
What is one fear or uncertainty you need to deliberately entrust to God this week?
Leader Hint: Encourage the group to identify specific fears and then answer those fears with specific truths about God.
2. SIGNIFICANT IN THE GOSPEL
Read Philippians 1:5, 12–18, 27.
Paul saw his entire life—including imprisonment and opposition—through the lens of the advance of the Gospel.
God has graciously allowed us to participate in something much bigger than ourselves. We are partners in the Gospel.
Discuss
- What mattered most to Paul in verses 12–18?
- How did Paul's understanding of the Gospel allow him to see even his imprisonment as meaningful?
- What does it mean for us today to be partners in the Gospel?
- How might your perspective change if you began asking, “How can God use this for the advance of the Gospel?”
- Where has God placed you right now—church, home, work, neighbourhood, school, friendships—where you can live as His ambassador?
Identify one person or situation where you can intentionally live, show or share the Gospel this week….Pray specifically for that opportunity.
Leader Hint: Help people see that Gospel significance is not about becoming impressive or important.
We matter because God has graciously included us in His eternal mission.
Ordinary conversations, hospitality, serving, generosity, suffering faithfully, sharing Christ and loving people can all have eternal significance.
3. SURRENDERED TO CHRIST
Read Philippians 1:21.
Paul could summarize his life in four extraordinary words: “To live is Christ.”
Jesus wasn't merely part of Paul's life. His relationship with Jesus defined Paul's life.
Security in Christ and significance in the Gospel lead naturally toward surrender: “All that I am and all that I have is Yours.”
Discuss
- What do you think Paul means when he says, “To live is Christ”?
- What competes with Jesus for the defining place in your life?
- Is there an area of your life that is particularly difficult for you to surrender to Christ?
- What is the difference between surrendering to Jesus because we are trying to earn His favour and surrendering because we already know we are secure and loved in Him?
Finish this sentence personally: “Jesus, because I am secure in You and called to participate in Your Gospel mission, I surrender ____________ to You.”
BRINGING IT HOME: Seeking 2 Apply God’s Word To Real Life
The sermon ended with three simple challenges:
· Remember what God has done for you.
· Remember what God has for you.
· Recommit your life to wanting more of Him.
Take a moment quietly and consider: Where is God calling me to move from “pretty good” Christianity toward greater devotion to Christ?
What would one concrete step of obedience look like this week?
PRAY TOGETHER
Spend your closing prayer time around these three themes:
Security — Thank God that our salvation, identity and future are secure in Christ.
Significance — Ask God to help us see ourselves as partners in the Gospel and give us opportunities to make Christ known.
Surrender — Ask God for hearts that can genuinely say:
“To live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Leader Hint
You don't need to get through every question.
The goal is not to finish the sheet, but to help people encounter God's Word, speak honestly with one another, and respond to Christ in concrete obedience.
Keep bringing the conversation back to the central question:
If Christ really is my security and His Gospel gives my life eternal significance, what would greater surrender to Him look like this week?
